Kempton Park High School officially unveiled its new state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Centre on Tuesday, a significant development poised to bolster technical education within the community. The facility, funded by a combination of provincial grants and corporate sponsorships from local logistics firms, features modern laboratories for physics and chemistry, a dedicated robotics workshop, and computer labs equipped for coding and engineering design software. This initiative directly addresses the growing demand for skilled professionals in Kempton Park's prominent industrial and logistics hub, situated strategically near O.R. Tambo International Airport.
The centre’s curriculum is designed to offer hands-on experience, moving beyond theoretical learning to practical application. Students will engage with advanced equipment, participate in robotics competitions, and undertake projects that mirror real-world challenges faced by local industries. This focus aims to create a direct pipeline of talent from Kempton Park High School into the burgeoning cargo, warehousing, and manufacturing sectors that define much of the Ekurhuleni Metro. During the opening ceremony, Ward Councillor Thabo Mokoena highlighted the long-term benefits for the community.
