Kempton Park High School officially unveiled its new state-of-the-art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Centre on Tuesday, a significant development poised to bolster technical education within the community. The facility, funded by a combination of provincial grants and corporate sponsorships from local logistics firms, features modern laboratories for physics and chemistry, a dedicated robotics workshop, and computer labs equipped for coding and engineering design software. This initiative directly addresses the growing demand for skilled professionals in Kempton Park's prominent industrial and logistics hub, situated strategically near O.R. Tambo International Airport.
The centre’s curriculum is designed to offer hands-on experience, moving beyond theoretical learning to practical application. Students will engage with advanced equipment, participate in robotics competitions, and undertake projects that mirror real-world challenges faced by local industries. This focus aims to create a direct pipeline of talent from Kempton Park High School into the burgeoning cargo, warehousing, and manufacturing sectors that define much of the Ekurhuleni Metro. The school's administration believes this investment will significantly improve matriculation rates in critical subjects and open new opportunities for its diverse student body.
During the opening ceremony, Ward Councillor Thabo Mokoena highlighted the long-term benefits for the community. "This STEM Centre is more than just a building; it's an investment in our children's future and the economic vitality of Kempton Park," Mokoena stated. "By providing our learners with access to cutting-edge technology and practical skills, we are equipping them to thrive in the industries that are literally on our doorstep. This initiative will undoubtedly contribute to reducing youth unemployment and fostering local innovation, making Kempton Park a leader in technical education."
The first cohorts of students are expected to begin utilising the new facilities in the coming academic term. Collaborations with local businesses, including mentorship programmes and potential internships, are already being explored to further integrate the centre's output with the needs of the local economy. This strategic educational upgrade is set to significantly impact Kempton Park's youth, preparing them for high-demand careers right within their own community.
