Kempton Park High School officially unveiled its new Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Centre on Tuesday, a significant development poised to enhance educational opportunities for learners in the area. The centre, funded through a combination of provincial grants and corporate sponsorships from local logistics firms, features modern laboratories for physics and chemistry, a dedicated computer programming suite, and a workshop for robotics and engineering practicals. This initiative directly addresses the growing demand for technically proficient individuals within Kempton Park's bustling industrial and logistics hub, adjacent to OR Tambo International Airport.
The facility is expected to serve over 800 students annually, offering advanced curriculum modules that align with industry needs. Principal Thabo Mokoena highlighted the centre's role in preparing students for future careers. "Our learners are growing up in a dynamic environment, surrounded by warehousing, cargo operations, and manufacturing. This STEM Centre provides them with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary to thrive in these industries, whether as engineers, technicians, or IT specialists. It's about building a pipeline of local talent right here in Ekurhuleni," Mokoena stated during the opening ceremony.
Local councillor for Ward 16, Jane Sibiya, who attended the launch, emphasised the community impact. "This investment in Kempton Park High School is an investment in our youth and our local economy. It ensures that our children have access to quality education that is relevant to the job market evolving around them. We are particularly excited about the potential for partnerships with businesses in Rhodesfield and the wider Kempton Park area, providing internships and mentorships for these STEM students."
The centre will begin its first advanced modules in the third term, focusing initially on Grade 10 and 11 students. Future plans include expanding reach to younger grades and offering evening workshops for community members interested in upskilling. This strategic enhancement aims to foster innovation and practical expertise, directly contributing to the socio-economic development of the Kempton Park community.
