Kempton Park Hospital, a cornerstone of healthcare for the Ekurhuleni Metro's industrial and residential communities, today unveiled a significant expansion to its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The upgrade, which includes 10 new high-care bassinets and state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, aims to address the growing demand for specialized care for vulnerable infants born in the bustling Kempton Park area and surrounding precincts like Rhodesfield.
This crucial development comes as the hospital continues to serve a diverse population, including many families working within the logistics and cargo industries near O.R. Tambo International Airport. The increased capacity means fewer transfers to other regional hospitals, allowing mothers and their newborns to remain closer to their families during critical recovery periods. The new unit is staffed by a dedicated team of neonatologists, paediatricians, and specialized nurses, ensuring round-the-clock expert care for the smallest patients.
Dr. Lerato Mdluli, Head of Paediatrics at Kempton Park Hospital, emphasized the impact of the expansion. "This new NICU expansion is a game-changer for our community. We often see complex cases due to various socio-economic factors in our catchment area, and having these additional resources means we can provide immediate, high-quality care to more premature and critically ill babies. It significantly reduces the stress on families who previously had to travel further for specialized treatment, keeping them closer to home during an incredibly challenging time," she stated.
The hospital administration confirmed that the project was funded through a combination of provincial health department allocations and local community trust contributions.
